The Tithe Apportionments Project

This is the first of what is expected to be a number of projects in which the Friends is to be engaged.

The Friends have decided to embark on a project to transcribe the contents of Somerset’s tithe apportionments and put them into a database. This will be a big project but it is seen as important in that it will gives users of the Record Office a tremendously large and detailed source of information, but also it is a project that can involve all kinds of members, both those who are able to visit the Record Officce and those who for one reason on another cannot.

Technology is the key. We already have three volunteers who are able to photograph the original records and put them on to a series of CD-ROMs. These images can be distributed along with empty computer files on CD-ROMS to any volunteer anywhere, as long as they have a computer, and they will be able to transcribe the contents without having to travel to Taunton to see the originals.

If you are interested in helping with the transcription, filming, or checking, please can you let Robin Leaman know as he is now the coordinator for this project. You can contact him by email here or find his deatils by clicking on Contacts above. If you know of anyone who has already transcribed any tithe apportionments could you also let him know that as it could save a lot of time.

It is hoped that the database might be available free of charge online in due course.

Other Projects There are other projects available to be undertaken and if you would like further details please contact the project coordinator. (See Contacts on the Menu Bar)
